We were welcomed by a friendly and informative staff and the art exhibit was fantastic. Once we were welcomed and given an overview of the museum you could go at your leisure to explore. The grounds were well maintained and there were plenty of trees for shade and oxygen outside, We'll be back!

The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African-American Museum is of historical and cultural importance to the community of St. Petersburg. Named after the African-American historian and civil rights activist who is best known as the founder of Black History Month and the second African-American to graduate from Harvard University with a doctorate degree, the museum is located at 2240 9th Avenue South in St. Petersburg, Florida, in the Jordan Park district. The museum's mission is "to preserve, present and interpret African-American history" and "to promote an understanding among various groups that comprise the St. Petersburg community." It displays temporary exhibits of artwork from African-American artists from Florida and Georgia and other states. In addition, the museum hosts a variety of events, such as weddings, birthdays, art walks, festivals and a "Chatting with the Chief" event that was launched in 2014 by the newly appointed Chief of Police, Anthony Holloway, who pledged open access to members of the community.

The art that was displayed during our visit was beautiful. This art should be displayed throughout the world. Now to mention the Garden, I could sit in this lovely garden all day and enjoy God's creation. Absolutely worth our time during our visit to the Bay area. Definitely will be back.

This newish museum venue may be hard to find, even with a GPS, but may be worth a visit, especially if you are African-American. It currently has a show by Florida "Highwaymen" artists (they sold art from their car trunks in the '60s). Chamber concerts by a world-class ensemble of The Florida Orchestra, occur monthly, often free.
